Beach town with marsh on the west

Rodent Control in Atlantic Beach, FL

Atlantic Beach runs from oceanfront homes to the marshes along the Intracoastal, with Hanna Park to the north. Roof rats and Norway rats both turn up here.

City of Atlantic Beach in Duval County, north of Neptune Beach. Beach Avenue, the Town Center at Atlantic Boulevard, Mayport Road, and Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park just north.

East of Mayport Road

Near the ocean, Atlantic Beach has a mix of older cottages, mid-century homes and newer builds on small lots, many shaded by oaks, palms and wax myrtles. Roof rats nest in palm skirts and dense shrubs and climb onto low roofs. Older homes often have screened porches and open soffits.

The Town Center at Atlantic Boulevard and First Street has restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and dumpsters behind, shared with neighboring Neptune Beach.

Older homes near the ocean

The older streets near the ocean have homes from several eras on small lots, and many have been added onto over the years. Each addition can leave a gap where new roof meets old. Outdoor showers, storage under raised homes and cluttered side yards give rodents cover. Salt air also corrodes vent screens and metal flashing faster than inland. A yearly look at the roofline, vents and the base of the house, especially after a nor'easter or hurricane, catches most new gaps before rodents use them.

West toward the marsh

West of Mayport Road, neighborhoods back onto creeks and marshes that drain into the Intracoastal Waterway. Norway rats live along those edges, and rice rats and cotton rats live in Florida marshes and grassy areas too. Garages and sheds near the marsh are common nesting spots.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, with its woods and lakes, sits just north of town. Homes on the north end see rodents moving in from the park edge.

Salt air is hard on sealing. Ask for copper or stainless mesh and exterior-grade sealant in any sealing work.
