Rodent Control on the Northside and in Oceanway

North Jacksonville is a mix of older neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, salt marsh and port land. Norway rats show up more here than in most of the city.

Duval County, north of the Trout River toward the Nassau County line. Oceanway along Main Street (U.S. 17) and New Berlin Road, with the Timucuan preserve marshes and JAXPORT's Blount Island and Dames Point terminals to the east.

Near the water and the port

The Northside borders a lot of water: the Trout River, the Broward River, the St. Johns and the wide salt marshes of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. Norway rats live along those banks. JAXPORT's Blount Island and Dames Point terminals and the rail lines and industrial land around them add more Norway rat habitat.

Homes near the water and near industrial areas see burrows along slabs, under sheds and in garden beds. Rats come into garages and under raised homes.

What helps most on the Northside

Ground-level sealing matters more here than in most of the city. Close gaps around plumbing and AC lines where they enter the wall, replace worn garage door seals, and screen crawl space vents on raised homes. Keep sheds off the ground or skirted with hardware cloth. Pick up feed and pet food at night, since many Northside lots have chickens, dogs or both. Check along fence lines and the edge of any marsh or ditch for burrows once a month, and report active burrows early.

Oceanway and newer subdivisions

Oceanway and the areas off New Berlin Road and Yellow Bluff Road have grown fast, with new subdivisions cut out of pine woods and wetlands. New homes on the edge of woods see roof rats and field rodents moving in from the tree line, especially when nearby land is cleared for the next phase.

Older parts of the Northside have mid-century block homes and some raised wood-frame houses, with the usual gaps at weep holes, garage doors and crawl spaces. A rat burrow treatment plan plus ground-level sealing fits a lot of homes here.

Northside and Oceanway rodent questions

Why do new Oceanway homes get rats?

Clearing land for new phases pushes rodents out of the woods and into the nearest homes, garages and sheds.

Do homes near the port see more rats?

Port land, rail lines and riverbanks all support Norway rats, so nearby homes often see more burrowing activity.

Can I report rats on a neighboring property?

Yes. Call 630-CITY. Municipal Code Compliance handles properties that harbor pests, overgrowth and debris.
